1

Measure Your Life Balance

One reason that college burnout occurs is because your life balance is out of order. Are you doing anything fun? Are you working out regularly? As important as college is, it cannot be your whole life. You need to take time for fun, relaxation and exercise in order to have a balanced life.

2

Avoid Unnecessary Stress

College is stressful. That is a given. But you need to try to avoid unnecessary stress. Don’t push yourself to achieve perfection. Make it your goal to do your best but don’t put yourself down if your grade isn’t the top score in the class. If you gave it a good effort and put in hard work, be happy with yourself, and your grade.

3

Ease up

Sometimes you are taking on too much. If you are trying to work and go to college at the same time, you may need to cut back on your work hours. If you are taking much more than what is considered a full course load, you may need to tweak that. Consider cutting back to the regular full course load. It may take you a little bit longer to reach your degree but avoiding college burnout is very important. If you are burned out, you may not reach your goals at all.

4

Take a Break

No, do not take a break from college. But taking a break from studying can help. If you typically study four hours every night, take a half hour break to read a magazine, watch a tv show or do something else that is fun for you. Break up long study sessions. Fix a smoothie or order a pizza to make those study sessions a little bit more pleasurable.

5

Study Differently

Sometimes you can get burned out because you are studying the same way all of the time. If this is the case, change your study habits up. Maybe you could listen to lectures over again rather than reading note after note. Perhaps you could write the definitions rather than reading the chapter over and over. This is where you need to get creative.

6

Get Enough Rest

You need to get enough rest when you are in college. I realize that is hard, especially when you have a big test you are studying for. But you will not be at your best if you are sleep deprived. It could even affect your performance. Aim to get 7-8 hours of sleep per night. You will feel better and have a healthier outlook on everything.

7

Keep the End Goal in Mind

Sometimes you just have to remember the end goal. Remind yourself what you are working for. This can really help you power through those rough times. It can also be good to remind yourself that what you are going through is temporary. Someday, you will have your degree and leave college behind.

These are some steps you can take to help you when you feel college burnout creeping up on you. Have you ever dealt with college burnout? What helped you?
