Relearn for Understanding

If you have been searching for tips for studying for the MCAT, this is probably the best one that you will see. Relearn the concepts for understanding and not just to relearn them. This tip may seem like a “DUH!!!” However, it is really easy to overlook things as you relearn them. You’re your time and make sure that you actually understand what you are trying to learn.

2

Difficult = More Practice

I was helping my brother with his algebra work the other day when he begged for us to stop because things were getting difficult. I would only let him take a break; not stop completely. When practice problems are difficult, it only means that you need more practice. The more a concept is practiced the better your understanding of what it going on. Practice more often and you will be able to solve difficult problems with ease soon.

3

Avoid Large Study Groups

When a study group gets past three or four members, it can become too easy for all group members to get distracted social media and techie gadgets let alone all of the company right next to them. Keep your study groups small and concise. You may even want to start as a large group and break into smaller groups based on what subjects you need to focus on.

4

Breakdown Large Topics

Topics like General Chemistry and Physics may seem super daunting, but if you break them down into smaller ones, you will be able to master them in no time at all. You can split up topics by the chapter topics as they appear in a textbook. You can even split the chapters up as well; especially if the chapters are long or cover complex information. However, you decide to split up the topics, be sure to make an outline of the complete topic so that you do not miss any information.

5

Rest Often

Information gets absorbed through rest. Just like how you cannot expect great weight loss if you do not rest properly; you cannot get superb knowledge without good rest. Take breaks here and there while studying. You will know exactly when a break is needed because you will find it super hard to concentrate.

Famous Quotes

Love is like a friendship caught on fire. In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep-burning and unquenchable.

6

Do Not Multitask

Multitasking is like having “Opposite Day” while you are studying. It does the exact opposite of what you want it to do. It makes you less productive. It makes you more anxious. You eventually see yourself becoming more and more distracted. Focus your energy on one task at a time. Take a break if you need it. Then come back to the work and push through it. You will see better results that way.

7

Push through

At times, preparing for the MCAT can get to be overwhelming. However, that means you just need to push yourself a little bit more and a little bit harder. Think of the process of studying as a pendulum. It takes some energy to get it going, but after the initial push things get easier for a while. You will have to push yourself more than once while studying, but you can do it.

8

Practice! Practice! Practice!

The best way to really understand concepts is to put them to use through practice. Every chance you get should be dedicated to practice problems and practice tests. There are many free tests located online. A basic search through Google stating “ MCAT Practice Test” will yield many options for you. Also, companies such as Kaplan offer free practice tests from time to time.

Be sure to snag every opportunity that you can. You can do this. You can ace this. How will you prepare for your MCAT?

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

It may seem odd but study outlines are a necessity. I used a lot of paper writing outlines studying for comprehensive exams for my PhD, college courses and two masters. HANDWRITE THOSE NOTES TOO. Studies show handwritten notes are retained better than typed. And keep a schedule. There is a lot on the MCAT and time won't be on your side. Keeping a schedule will help to make sure you study all the topics required instead of getting bogged down on a single one and lose a lot time. Leave about a week or two before your exam to cover those topics you didn't get to or need more studying to fully understand.
