There are tons of reasons to listen to your parents, but since teens are pretty rebellious by nature, it may be a bit difficult to recognize them. However, you can trust me; I’m seventeen and have had my fair share of days when I wanted to ignore my mom and dad! But at the end of the day, I find it hard to ignore all of the convincing reasons to listen to your parents.
For some, one of the most convincing reasons to listen to your parents is simply the fact that your parents - that’s right, your uptight, ancient, overprotective parents - were teens once too! They did or watched their friends do all of the things they won’t let you do now, so you can know their rules come from a knowledgable source. No one is born old, and your parents really do know what it’s like to be in your shoes, they just also happen to know better.
Even when your parents ground you and discipline you, they genuinely care about you. Because of that, you should listen to them. They have your best interests at heart; nothing they do is to sabotage you like you might think. Every rule they establish is to keep you safe and happy, so keep that in mind next time you find yourself ignoring them.
Parents can provide your life with a great outside perspective. They aren’t influenced by the latest gossip on campus, nor by the hottest trend in the media you’re influenced by. Your parents have the ability to see the whole picture, so before you slam the door in your mom’s face, hear what she has to say. She might just have the advice you need!
Okay, let’s be honest, this is really the greatest perk of listening to your parents! When you listen to your parents, you can avoid discipline. Even though listening to them might mean not doing everything your friends are doing, you’ll still have more freedom than you would if you disobeyed and got grounded.
It may not seem like it now, but your relationship with your parents will likely end up being one of the best, most important ones you form over the course of your life. Because of this, you want to keep your relationship strong and positive! Adolescence has many turning points in everyone’s life, which means more things will change than stay the same. You have to be an active player in your life if you want to maintain stability within all of your relationships, including the one with your parents.
When you’re obeying and listening to your parents, you don’t really have the option to make bad decisions. Naturally, you will slip up and do things you’ll regret someday, but it wouldn’t be high school if it weren’t for those moments! However, you’ll regret less later on if you listen to your parents and spend more time studying than partying.
Eventually, your parents will give you more freedom if you listen to them. They will trust your judgement and build a trustful relationship between you and them. When your parents put more faith in you, you’ll be allowed to become more independent, without sneaking around, breaking their rules, and ignoring them without their knowledge.
Listening to your parents is tough, but it’s definitely worth it. By the end of high school, you’ll be grateful that you listened to their superior judgement and honored the people who brought you into this world. Why do you think it’s important to listen to your parents?
